nuntium octogesimum quartum (84th post) ad audiendum (Latin audio 1)

ad audiendum et dicendum Are you ready for the first Latin audio lesson? It's only 10 minutes and 26 seconds.  If you do decide to listen, please let me know what you think.  I want to continue with this idea but if there's obvious improvements, I'd love to learn about them now!  You can play directly from the page or you can click on the share button and then download it to play on an mp3 player (over and over if you wanted- haha!)

Maybe you can tat at the same time...

Here's some snow from Minnesota for you- nothing new but I've been making them for my sister.
Minnesota snow

I have a dear friend who is from Romania and her lovely mother recently was there for a few months.  She brought me back some of the most amazing thread/yarn but I'm stumped with what to do with it.

I'm not really sure what its original intent was.  It says macrame but I think that's a language thing.  Part of me wants to jump into the deep water and dye some of it.  (never tried that before.)  The other part says to keep it as is and make a set of placemats because there's so much.

Opinions?  Ideas?  Suggestions?

  1. That looks just like the cotton I used to use a lot in knitting days that is made in Greece. This packaged looks just like it. It looks like a double-knitting weight yarn, which is about 22 stitches/inch - great for sweaters, kids clothing etc. It is mercerized (treated chemically and will not shrink very much and has a nice shine probably), which is nicer than un-mercerized cotton for knitting or crochet work. This would probably take to dye very well. Nice amount for a kids vert or something like that.

I KNEW you were flakey! Nice work!

p.s I actually understood your Latin story! Amazing how that language stayed in my memory bank!

  2. That was so much fun! I would have done better if I'd also had the words to look at. I would love to have you for a Latin teacher. Mrs. Larson was great, but that was 45 years ago!

I'm not familiar with that cotton, but I'd be tempted to knit with it. Even though I love hand-dyed thread, I know that's something I'll never try. I hope you have fun with it!

  3. I will begin the Latin studies at the end of this week, when Ginny flies home! - we've been on the go almost every day since she arrived nearly 3 weeks ago.
That cotton is probably what we would call 4-ply - lightweight - you could crochet with it, perhaps. There might even be enough for a shawl. Have a look round on Ravelry, you might find some information there about the brand.

  4. I will come back and try the Latin, but for now those snowflakes are gorgeous, marcrame is another type of knotting, now perhaps they yarn is made for that only, as it's European I am wondering if she has got muddled up with tatting and marcrame as both use the word knotting but in very different ways. I cant see the label so I can't see if I can go to the wool shop and see if they have any with the same label to help you

  5. I would dye some in the Mom's favorite colors and make her a nice thank you gift.
