Modern miracle - nuntium trecesimum vicesimum quartum

Doesn’t look like much, does it? But to me, it’s huge. Six weeks ago I was walking, fell down and broke three bones in my hand. I won’t show you any pictures because it was absolutely awful but thanks to the miracles of modern science, I can tat again. Five weeks to the day and almost the hour I was able to wrap thread around my hand,  hold my shuttle and tat.
I’ve been absolutely dedicated to the physical therapy and when I did all the exercises (most days),  it was over five hours of PT a day. I’m not complaining, I can use my hand and I can even tat!  My stitches are not perfect or even but I figure that it will be sort of like a visual record of my progress.   I can’t believe how lucky I feel to be able to do this again.

  8. I'm so happy you can tat again! Modern science is amazing! I'm not sure I agree with everything they introduce, but broken bones are something I truly trust them to get right. Following pt protocols certainly makes a difference. I remember how thrilled I was when the doctor told me I could tat/knit/crochet for a few minutes a day, but not to overdo it. I followed his directions to the letter, because he scared me by telling me I might not have the use of my left hand if I didn't. Fright can be a powerful motivator!

  9. Goodness me! This was a shock to read! I'm relieved to know you are able to use your hand again! (Right or left - not that it matters!) Can you drive? Just don't overdo. The tatting looks just fine!

    1. you are so kind! It was quite a shock (literally too) and I was stunned to find how much time I really do tat. Fortunately it was my left hand and I am right handed although I find I am remarkably two handed. I have been surprised at how many things I really do left handed, e.g. yesterday I found out that I peel eggs with my left). As I do more things (yay) I find more and more. I’m also shocked at how weak my left hand is despite all the pt. Two days ago I couldn’t get the cap off a sharpie marker! I can drive and fortunately my car is an automatic transmission. It will be a while before I drive a manual again. Just had the second pin out on Wednesday and have been taking it easy. Tatting, maybe tomorrow. Don’t worry, I am cautious as I want to be able to use it in the future M

    2. Thanks for the update! Will be watching your progress! I can empathize because in 2002 at age 58 I broke both my wrists when trying to relive my youth by 'returning' to ice skating after a long absence.
I fortunately made a complete recovery but recently am experiencing some arthritis issues (I'm older now!) and the other day couldn't get the cap off a Sharpie marker, either!

  12. Hi Michelle, Some how I missed this post. Probably because it was at the beginning of this moving "adventure" and I don't have my computer(a desktop) with me in the hotel room.
I sure hope by now your hand is doing much better and that you are able to tat more easily!! I will pray for you! Have a wonderful day!!!
