Sitting in the airport- nuntium duocentesimum tricesimum

Here I am in the airport in Paris on my way to England.  I got 3/4 of the way around the doily and realized that my spare bobbin of yellow is cleverly packed in my checked bag!  I guess I'll have to sleep on the little flight.  I know I could cut the ball thread too but I'm so tired I'm sure I would mess it up!
So, what's a girl to do?  Pinterest to the rescue!  I found a lovely photo which has no link to anything else and there's a technique that I'm dying to figure out!  So to be clear... This is NOT my work, I 'd don't know whose it is or the pattern.  If you know, let me know and I will absolutely give credit, etc.

Does anyone know the technique to create the little flower bursts?

  1. That is sweet, like multiple picots. No, I don't know how it's done, good luck with finding out.

  3. Yes, I came across this spectacular piece on pinterest !
My own take is that these are SCMRs, with diverse thrown/floating rings. I would start with the topmost layer of 4 large SCMR 'petals', then turn the work over & tat from the back side, so that the work doesn't meddle with tatting.
Or one can tat each layer separately & sew together in centre with beads. Perhaps the center with beads is also tatted (can't tell clearly).

The thrown rings are 1. normal but on a mock picot ; 2. with long picots after each DS
    Just my 2-cents

    1. Okay, that all makes sense. If you look at the outermost chains, how do you make the little flowers? They're not Josephines, are they?

    2. Looking forward to your working :-)
I am taking a break from tatting & will Not be tempted ;-P
Those rings had me a bit confused, but I went with normal rings with long picots, though not JRs.
After staring & staring, I think this is how it is done : the "picots" are simply the ball thread being wrapped over and over on, say, a picot gauge ; then forming a half stitch around the middle to secure in place. We thus have 'picots' emerging on either side. Then continue with the chain/SCMR.
Don't know if I've been able to explain it well. Please let me know ... I might just be tempted to rustle out my shuttles & give it a go ;-P

    3. Now that is what it looks like, I wonder if I'll have any success! First I must finish round 15 though. I'm delighted that I'm tempting you into this... What are you doing instead?

  6. I agree ith Muskaan - scmr - but I think the flowery thing is just a bunch of long picots on one scmr, drawn tightly to form the petals, à la Martha Ess!

  7. I saw this Pinterest too, and looked at it and wondered if there was a pattern, not sure if I can work it but I will give it a ago. I should welcome you to England, you don't say where you are going but if you are coming to Bath or the West Country let me know it would be nice to meet up.
